Commercial storage: managed rather than self-storage. Contents collected, inventoried, held in a managed facility and returned on agreed notice. Billed on volume stored plus handling in and out.
Continuum Green holds business contents between moves and through phased projects. Items are collected, inventoried, stored in a managed facility, and returned when you need them. Manchester-based, working across the UK.
Most commercial storage exists because two dates do not line up. You have to leave one building before the next is ready, a floor is being refurbished around occupied teams, or surplus from a site closure is waiting for the site that needs it.
That is a different requirement from renting a unit. You are not looking for a room to visit; you are looking for someone to take contents away, keep track of them, and bring the right ones back on a date you have not fixed yet.
Contents are inventoried on collection, because storage without a record is just a slower way of losing things. Retrieval works against that inventory rather than someone’s memory of which container something went into.
Storage is usually part of a wider project rather than a standalone service. It sits alongside relocation, redeployment between sites, and clearance, and it is normally scoped with them.
Managed storage and self-storage solve different problems. Picking the wrong one is expensive in a way that only becomes obvious later.
| Managed storage | Self-storage unit | |
|---|---|---|
| Access | On request with agreed notice. We retrieve and deliver. | You hold a key and go yourself, during opening hours. |
| What is recorded | An inventory at container or item level, produced on collection. | Whatever you wrote down when you filled it. |
| Handling | Our crews load, store and retrieve. | Your staff, in their own time, with their own vehicles. |
| Billed on | Volume actually stored, plus handling in and out. | A fixed unit rate whether the unit is full or a third full. |
| Suits | Between-move holding, phased projects, redeployment stock, surplus awaiting a decision. | Stock you pick from regularly, or anything needing frequent unsupervised access. |
If your team will visit weekly, rent a unit. If contents need to leave, be accounted for, and come back once, managed storage costs less and loses less.
Every business stores items for a different reason. Some need temporary space during a move, while others need support for furniture, equipment or excess stock.
Our team helps collect, organise and return your items when required, giving your business a storage process that feels structured and easy to manage.
Storage quotes look similar and behave very differently. These are the questions that separate them.
| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Inventory at what level? | Container level is cheaper to create. Item level means you can retrieve one cabinet without unpacking everything around it. |
| What notice for retrieval? | Flexible access means nothing without a stated lead time. Agree it before you need something urgently. |
| Insured on what basis? | Cover calculated by weight is close to meaningless for office contents. Agree a declared value. |
| Minimum term and billing period? | Monthly minimums make a three-week requirement cost a month, and sometimes two. |
| Handling charges in and out? | Frequently separate from the storage rate, and on short stays the larger of the two figures. |
| Who can authorise release? | A named list prevents anyone who knows your company name collecting your assets. |
We support commercial clients that need storage linked with relocation, delivery, installation or project work across Manchester and the UK.
Your items are handled carefully, grouped clearly and managed with your wider business schedule in mind, helping reduce delays and confusion.
Storage is a bridge, not a destination, and the commonest mistake is using it as one.
The arithmetic is simple and rarely done. Take the monthly cost of storing an item, multiply by how long it will realistically stay, and add the handling charges at both ends. Compare that with what replacing the item would cost. For a floor of good task chairs, storage wins comfortably over six months. For mismatched pedestals and ageing desks, it stops making sense within weeks.
The decision belongs before collection rather than after. Once items are in storage, nobody revisits them, the invoices continue, and the eventual outcome is often disposal of things you paid for two years to keep.
Where surplus has no confirmed destination, deciding at the point of clearance is cheaper than storing while you think about it. See furniture disposal and reuse for the routes, and clearance where a whole site is being emptied.
A rough test that works: if an item would cost less to replace than to store for the period you actually need, store nothing and buy later. If it would cost more, store it and set a review date in the diary rather than leaving the arrangement open-ended. The review date is the part people skip, and it is the reason storage invoices outlive the projects that started them.
Where a return date genuinely cannot be fixed, agree a point at which the decision gets revisited rather than a term. An open commitment with no review is how a six-week bridge becomes a three-year cost.

Contents that go into storage badly prepared come out damaged, and the damage happens quietly over months rather than visibly on collection day.
Before collection: empty every drawer and pedestal, because contents shift and burst seams in transit. Remove keys and tape them to the unit they belong to, since a locked cabinet with a missing key is worth nothing when it comes back. Leave items assembled unless dismantling is documented, because components separated from their parent item rarely find their way home again. And record the condition of anything valuable on collection, so there is a baseline if a claim ever arises.
Some things should not go into storage at all, and facilities will usually decline them.
| Do not store | Why |
|---|---|
| Liquids, cleaning chemicals, aerosols | They leak, and when they do they damage everything stacked around them. Most facilities exclude them by contract. |
| Batteries and battery-powered equipment | Fire risk. Lithium cells degrade in storage and can vent or ignite without warning. |
| Food, drink and anything perishable | Attracts pests, and pests do not confine themselves to the container they arrived in. |
| Plants | They will not survive, and they introduce damp and insects to everything nearby. |
| Unindexed confidential records | Files with no index cannot be retrieved on request or disposed of against a retention date. They belong in indexed records storage. |
| Anything you will not want back | The most expensive entry here. Storing something for two years and then disposing of it costs the storage, the handling both ways, and the disposal. |
We are clear about what this is not.
We are not a self-storage operator. You cannot rent a unit from us and come and go with a key. If unsupervised access is what you need, a self-storage facility is genuinely the better answer and will cost you less.
We do not provide climate or humidity controlled storage, and we do not offer specialist conditions for artwork, wine, or archival material requiring conservation environments. Where a collection needs those, use a specialist.
Paper records held against retention dates are a different service with its own documentation. See document storage rather than storing boxes of files here.
Questions we are asked most often about storing business contents.
No. This is managed storage, not a self-storage unit. We retrieve and deliver against agreed notice. If your team needs to come and go independently, rent a unit instead.
It depends on the notice period agreed at the outset and on how the inventory was recorded. Item-level records produce a specific chair far faster than container-level ones.
When cumulative storage plus handling approaches replacement cost. That point arrives within weeks for low-value mismatched items and after many months for good quality stock.
Contents in our care are covered, and you should agree a declared value rather than accepting cover calculated by weight, which does not reflect what office contents are actually worth.
Records held against retention dates belong in document storage, which is indexed and documented differently. General business contents belong here.
