What a Data Centre Relocation Involves

A data centre relocation is a shutdown, a transport operation, and a controlled restart, executed against a runbook that everyone has agreed in advance. The hardware is the easy part. The difficulty is that everything depends on something else: nothing energises until power is proven, nothing is reachable until circuits are live, and nothing is signed off until your team has verified it against a pre-move baseline.

We record the state of the environment before anything is powered down. Rack elevations, port maps, power distribution, cable runs, and asset serials are captured while the estate is still working, so the rebuild is a reconstruction of something documented rather than a reassembly from memory.

The work is sequenced jointly with your infrastructure team, your managed service provider, and the mechanical and electrical contractor at the destination. Our crews handle the physical discipline: shutdown order, rack handling, shock-protected transport, re-racking, and reinstatement of power and network connections to the documented configuration.

Your team retains ownership of what happens above the hardware. We do not touch configuration, and we do not make architecture decisions during a move. That boundary is agreed in writing at survey, because the most common failure on an otherwise clean relocation is a task that sat unclaimed between two suppliers.

Populated or De-Populated: How Racks Actually Travel

Whether racks travel populated or stripped is a real decision with consequences either way, and it is worth making deliberately rather than by default.

Moving a populated rack means fewer disconnections, less re-cabling, and a faster rebuild. It also means moving a tall, top-heavy, and extremely valuable object. Populated racks are heavy enough to matter for floor loading, lift capacity, and ramp gradients, and they concentrate the entire risk of the move into a small number of items.

De-populating means every device is removed, individually protected, and re-racked at the destination. It takes longer, requires disciplined labelling, and depends entirely on the quality of the elevation record. It also distributes risk across many smaller items and removes the floor loading and lift capacity questions almost entirely.

Hard drives and spinning media are the sensitive component in either approach. Shock and vibration during transport is the risk that does not announce itself. A drive can survive the journey and fail days later, which is why post-move verification matters as much as the move and why your backups should be confirmed good before anything is powered down.

The Rollback Position, and Why the Origin Stays Intact

Every relocation plan describes what happens when it works. Fewer describe what happens when it does not, and that is the document you will want at two in the morning.

A rollback plan answers three questions. At what point in the sequence is returning to the old site still possible? Who has the authority to make that call, and by when? What has to remain intact at the origin for a return to be viable at all?

The third question is the one that gets missed. If the old comms room has been stripped, the circuits ceased, and the racks disposed of, there is nothing to roll back to. Decommissioning the origin is the final step of the project, not a parallel one, and it does not begin until the destination is confirmed working and signed off.

We plan the origin decommissioning as a separate phase for exactly this reason, and we do not start it until your team has confirmed bring-up. It is slower. It is also the difference between a difficult night and an unrecoverable one.

When We Are Not the Right Fit

Some data centre projects are not ours, and it is cheaper for everyone if we say so at survey.

If you need a genuine zero-downtime migration, that is achieved through parallel infrastructure and workload cutover, not through moving hardware quickly. It is an architecture project, and the physical move may not feature in it at all.

We do not perform logical data migration, cloud migration, or hypervisor-level work. We do not redesign network architecture or make configuration changes during a relocation. We move, rebuild, and reinstate the environment you documented with us.

What is the difference between a data centre relocation and a migration?

A relocation physically moves your existing hardware to a new site and brings it back up on the same kit. A migration moves workloads onto different hardware or a cloud platform, and the original equipment may never move. They have different suppliers, different costs, and very different downtime profiles.

How much downtime should we plan for?

For a physical relocation, downtime equals the move window plus bring-up and verification. It is a planned outage agreed in advance, normally over a weekend or an agreed maintenance period. Anyone quoting near-zero downtime for a physical move is describing a migration, not a relocation.

Do racks travel with equipment still installed?

Sometimes. It depends on rack weight against floor loading and lift capacity, the access route at both ends, and your risk tolerance. We assess it at survey and recommend one or the other rather than defaulting to whichever is faster for us.

What happens if something does not come back up?

The runbook includes a rollback position with a named decision owner and a cut-off time. The origin site stays intact until your team confirms bring-up at the destination, so returning remains possible for as long as the plan allows.

What happens to hardware we are retiring?

It is separated from the move stream. Data-bearing devices go through certified destruction with a certificate issued against individual assets, in line with your obligations under the UK GDPR. Remaining hardware is assessed for reuse or resale before recycling, and you receive waste transfer documentation.
